Plastics Industry Awards Finalists 2023

UK Extrusion are delighted to be nominated as finalists at the Plastics Industry Awards. This prestigious awards ceremony is held in London each November and we are thrilled to be in the running again, twice!

We are doubly pleased that we have been chosen as finalists for two separate projects, both in the Supplier Partnership Prime Machinery category. This sector is always the most hotly contested and we are proud to be featuring alongside Bole, Engel, Arburg, Krauss Maffei and STV Machinery.

Our first entry is with our customer Elite Plastics based in Hereford. Elite is one of the UK’s leading independently family owned and run companies, specialising in extruding, printing, converting and recycling of polythene films, bags and covers. In order to provide an improved service for their clients, Elite identified the need for a multi-layer blown film line. This would enable them to offer technically superior films using different materials and most importantly 30% recycled content. UK Extrusion and engineers from Bandera worked with Elite to to provide the perfect line for their requirements. It was no mean feat given that even the roof had to be raised to install it! The project was a partnership at every stage, from planning to implementation and subsequent engineering support.

Elite Plastics are also nominated for the Sustainability Award for their Net Zero strategy which includes solar panels on the their extrusion hall roofs, multiple energy saving projects, vastly increased use of recycled material developing the circular economy and investing in technological advancements.

Our second entry is with our customer Berry Global. Through a fruitful collaboration with UK Extrusion, plastics packaging manufacturer Berry Global has upgraded the recycling process at its site in Bromborough, Merseyside. With UK Extrusion’s advice, Berry has taken steps towards maximising energy efficiency while also using less space. Central to this project was the Plasmac ALPHA XS, an air-cooled recycling extruder that replaced the previous water-cooled machine. Berry has been delighted with the level of service and support provided by UK Extrusion throughout the trial period and subsequent purchase and installation of further machines. “The engineering excellence and experience exceeds expectations”.

The UK Extrusion team and our friends at Elite and Berry are looking forward to the event on November 17th. The PIastics Industry Awards are always eagerly anticipated. It’s a great event, where we will catch up with old friends, raise a glass and hopefully pick up an award. Do come and see us if you are going, we would love to buy you a beer!

Being nominated is a great honour in itself. Best of luck to all participating. #PIA2023

Eurexma K7

Eurexma K7 Pilot Blown Film Line on show at Milan Plast, Sept 5 – 8.

EUREXMA is showcasing the new PILOT BLOWN K7 next week at the Plast exhibition in Milan. Meet the UK Extrusion team there from Sept 5th – 8th.

The PILOT BLOWN K7, produces 7-layer films, useful for developing multi-layer film formulations with polymers with different properties:
·        Barrier towards oxygen, carbon dioxide and odours
·        Lightness
·        Mechanical strength
·        Heat and UV resistance

The PILOT BLOWN K7 consists of 7 XTR 20 extruders with 20 mm ø screws, suitable for processing different types of polymers with different features and viscosity.

The tubular film come out of the 80 mm ø die is cooled thanks to the innovative cooling air ring produced by SYNCRO, as well as the smallest automatic ring available on the market today, the TYPHOON Y00.

In a combined action with SONYSCAN, an innovative ultrasonic scanner provided by SYNCRO, it can guarantee a precise film thickness control with excellent tolerances.

The combined action of all these elements makes it possible to obtain a tubular film of different widths, up to a maximum of 400 mm and different thicknesses, with a range from 20 to 150 microns, meet the increasingly stringent standards imposed in the food and medical industries.

The EYES, a visual quality inspection system produced by ACELABS are high-resolution cameras, scanning 100% of the film, detecting and classifying every type of defect.

SYLINE XXS gravimetric feeders, placed on all the extruders of the line, ensures a precise control of the extruder output.

Plasmac Omega Reduces Plastic Waste for Emtelle

Plastic Waste has been significantly reduced by a global leader in the supply of blown fibre cable and ducted network solutions with the use of the Plasmac Omega

Emtelle is a worldwide manufacturer of pre-connectorised, blown fibre cable and ducted network solutions. As part of its four point sustainability strategy, Emtelle has a vision to reduce emissions, improve resource sustainability, reduce plastic waste, and be a fair employer and partner.

One of the components they manufacture for their range of solutions is polyethylene Microducta & sheathed Microduct Bundles for fibre optic cables.  In a step to address their desire to reduce plastic waste, Emtelle discussed with UK Extrusion the recycling of scrap tubing & sheathing. They were at that time putting scrap out to a third party for recycling, but could see the benefits of keeping as much of this activity in-house as possible.  Continue reading

Plasmac Introduce New Alpha XS For Inline Recycling

Plasmac has released their newest variant of the highly successful ALPHA range of direct extrusion recycling systems for the recycling of inline trim.

The ALPHA XS is a very compact, energy-efficient, and highly cost-effective addition to the Alpha range of extruders.

Featuring a reduced footprint of less than 1 sq metre and power consumption of less than 0.2kW/Kg the ALPHA XS also offers the option of a roll feed unit for off-spec reels. Providing output up to 50 Kg/h. this is a magnificent little workhorse.

Plasmac has designed the ALPHA XS with a new air-cooled pelletising system that has increased the cooling capacity by over 50% and the new design of cutting system allows users to set up and forget it.

With a new improved cutting blade with a longer life and better pellet cutting, Plasmac believes the Alpha XS will set the standards for inline recycling systems for in-house industrial waste recycling.

Extrusion Lines and Recycling in Virtual Open House

When a global leader in the design and manufacture of extrusion lines for plastic packaging and converting virtually opens its doors to the industry, it’s bound to be a popular event.

Bandera’s Plastic Week 2021 Virtual Open House was held 21, 22, 23, and 25 June hosted by the Bandera Technical Centre, The House Of Extrusion® which specialises in Bandera’s Testing and Research and Development activities. Throughout the week a common theme of the Circular Economy was the underlying trend as Bandera showed their innovation.

Bandera are no strangers to the concept of video streaming from their premises, having been pioneers of the concept during the early days of the pandemic. Their streaming from Italy to the rest of the world, last year, was met with enthusiastic accolades from the plastics industry. Continue reading

image of Plasmac Epsilon plastic scrap reclamation unit

Post-Industrial Plastic Scrap Reclamation

Plasmac has added a new range of Post-Industrial Plastic Scrap Reclamation machinery to its portfolio of effective, energy-efficient recycling machines for post-industrial plastic waste.

The Epsilon range is based around a dual-diameter screw and direct shredder feeding system. A single shaft shredder is mounted on top of the hopper entry. The shredder is cantilevered for easy access to the screw and for cleaning. The shredder is particularly useful for pre-size reduction of some types of feedstock, such as rigid polymers, skeletal waste, thicker trims, and film off-cuts and cut-outs.

At the smaller end of the range, the Epsilon machines are perfect to be used as high-speed inline trim recycling machines or for thicker trims.

The larger Epsilon machines are ideal for the recycling of start-up scrap, injection moulding scrap, and for the recycling of non-wovens.

Depending on the application, Plasmac offers two types of pelletising systems, either AIRCOOL or HYDROCOOL. Normally, the smaller machines would be AIRCOOL and the larger machines can be supplied either AIRCOOL OR HYDROCOOL.

There are a number of standard options available to ensure that this system is perfect for your needs and our team are happy to discuss these with you.
